A revolution in the world of luxury limousines with the arrival of the Mercedes EQS. Entirely developed to be a 100% electric model, this large sedan pushes all the limits of driving with zero CO2 emissions.
Design of the Mercedes EQS electric 2021
The Mercedes-Benz EQS was revealed with an unexpected design for the star brand, taking much from the concept car that preceded it.
Exterior
On the outside, the EQS Mercedes inherits the characteristic elements of the rest of the EQ range, with the specific light signaturmodele and a full grille with a Mercedes-Benz star design.
The profile of the electric car features a body shape, marketed by the brand as the “arc”, which puts an end to the classic columnar sedan silhouette.
Unlike the 24-inch wheels of the concept, the electric car has rather thin rims, from 19 to 22 inches, with removable parts studded with small holes to accentuate aerodynamics. Everything has been worked on to improve airflow: the doors are seamless, the door handles are retractable, the fenders are curved, and the underbody is streamlined.
On request, the production model can have digital headlights, capable of projection at the front. As for the rear lights, they have a new helical layout inside, a 3D helix design. At the front and rear, a central strip of light connects the lights.
Interior
Step inside the Mercedes Benz EQS and discover a futuristic, cutting-edge interior, featuring the spectacular optional MBUX HyperScreen. The giant screens of the Tesla and even the Ford Mustang Mach-E are getting old!
Indeed, this giant 56-inch screen is composed of a glass surface, in aluminum silicate, over the entire width of the vehicle (1.41 m). The latter is divided into three segments.
Behind the steering wheel, a first 12.3-inch LCD screen for the “instrument cluster”, in the center, a 17.7-inch OLED screen, and a third, facing the front passenger, also 12.3 inches.
Enjoy the ambient lighting familiar from other Mercedes-Benz models. A continuous strip of light in the instrument panel and door area is active and warns of potential danger on the road. Warning of a vehicle on the side (blind spot assistant), when changing lanes, or when crossing a line.
The classic center tunnel is non-existent. As a result, the center console floats freely in the cabin, and offers USB ports under the controls, as well as additional storage space.
Mercedes paid special attention to the filtration of the outside air. Indeed, 99.6% of pollen, fine dust and other micro-particles are retained, bringing well-being on board.
The Mercedes EQS electric vehicle is made of high quality, carefully selected, sustainable materials. The wood used in the EQS comes from local forests.
For the decorative fabrics, they are made from waste plastic from the sea, and the microfiber fabrics from polyethylene terephthalate bottles. For the bodywork, it consists of 80% secondary steel, such as steel, aluminum and carbon.
Trunk dimensions and volume
The Mercedes-Benz EQS is a very long car of 5.22 meters and can carry up to seven people in total. The width is 1.93 meters, and the height is 1.51 meters. Wheelbase of 3.21 meters is exceptional! These dimensions provide a nice first class space for the rear passengers.
The large and convenient power tailgate gives access to a huge trunk of 610 liters, and up to 1,770 liters when the rear seat is folded down. This is plenty of room for luggage and other bulky items. There’s also a bin under the floor to store all the charging cables and emergency equipment.
Motorization and performance
At the time of the Mercedes-AMG EQS launch, two electric motor configurations were available. Recently, a third one was added to the catalog:
EQS 450+
This rear-wheel drive version has an engine that reaches 333 hp (245 kW) of maximum power and 565 Nm of torque. The 0 to 100 km/h is reached in 6.2 seconds.
EQS 580 4MATIC
This configuration is very resourceful thanks to its two electric motors (one on each axle). The unit develops a power of 523 hp (385 kW) and 858 Nm of torque at all four wheels. The performance is exemplary with 4.3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h.
Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+
The performance of this third version is significantly better than that of the classic sedan. With 658 hp (484 kW) and 950 Nm of torque, the 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in 3.8 seconds. The electric motor is limited to 210 km/h for all three configurations, despite a mass of 2,805 kg in the basic configuration.

Battery and autonomy
The Mercedes EQS incorporates a large lithium-ion battery, with a useful capacity of 108.4 kWh. The highest among electric cars. Tesla boasts of record aerodynamics with a Cx of 0.20, never seen before! This coefficient improves the efficiency, but also the autonomy of the vehicle.
The EQS Mercedes offers an electric range of 783 km in the WLTP combined cycle for the EQS 450+ version, 692 km for the EQS 580 4MATIC version, and 571 km for the third 53 4MATIC+ version. With these results, the Mercedes EQS is a very high-end rival to the Tesla Model S.
Nevertheless, the actual range depends on a number of points to be taken into consideration, and therefore may differ. The configuration of the vehicle, the way of driving, the traffic conditions, the weather conditions, the age and condition of the battery, the use of the air conditioning and/or heating system, etc.

Charging the new electric Mercedes EQS
With such a battery powered by a 400 volt system, the Mercedes EQS offers up to 200 kW of DC power with the Combo standard. Thus, 300 km of autonomy are recovered in 15 minutes and 10% to 80% in 31 minutes on a fast charging station (DC) available in Ionity stations among others.
You can also connect your electric vehicle at home to a standard 2.3 kW household socket. But there, it will take two days for a complete recharge. Certainly a little too long, but rest assured, with the 11 kW charger supplied as standard, it only takes 6h55 to recover 80%.

The prices of the car
In terms of pricing, the German limousine is available to order for €135,850 in the 450+ version. The top-of-the-line AMG 4Matic+ model costs €169,850. The star brand’s latest addition is positioned head-on against the Tesla Model X Plaid, which costs €141,990.

Our opinion
If you like modernity, elegance, power and performance, then the Mercedes EQS is for you! The vehicle’s fuel consumption is under control and its handling in the city is pleasant thanks to the 10-degree steerable rear axle. The price may be a drag on the wallet, but it’s hard to fault for a luxury limousine.
