A revolution in the world of luxury limousines with the arrival of the Mercedes EQS. Entirely developed to be a 100% electric model, this large sedan pushes all the limits of driving with zero CO2 emissions.
Design of the 2021 Mercedes EQS Electric
The Mercedes-Benz EQS was unveiled with an unexpected design for the Star brand, taking much from the concept car that preceded it.
Exterior
On the outside, the Mercedes EQS inherits the characteristic elements of the rest of the EQ range, with the specific lighting signature and a complete grille with the Mercedes-Benz star design. The profile of the electric car features a body shape, marketed by the brand as an "arc", which ends the classic columnar sedan silhouette.
Unlike the concept's 24-inch wheels, the electric car has rather thin wheels, from 19 to 22 inches, with removable parts dotted with small holes to accentuate aerodynamics. Everything has been worked on to improve air flow: the doors are seamless, the handles are retractable, the fenders are curved, and the underbody is aerodynamic.
On request, the production model can have digital headlights, capable of projecting themselves at the front. As for the rear lights, they feature a new helical layout inside, a 3D spiral design. At the front and rear, a central light strip connects the headlights.
Interior
Entering the Mercedes Benz EQS reveals a futuristic and cutting-edge cabin, characterized by the spectacular optional MBUX HyperScreen. The giant screens ofTeslaand even the FordMustang Mach-Eare becoming outdated!
Indeed, this giant 56-inch screen is made of a glass surface, in aluminum silicate, across the entire width of the vehicle (1.41 m). The latter is divided into three segments. Behind the steering wheel, a first 12.3-inch LCD screen for the "instrument cluster", in the center an OLED 17.7-inch screen and a third, facing the front passenger, also 12.3 inches.
Enjoy the ambient lighting already known in other Mercedes-Benz models. A continuous light strip on the dashboard and door area is active and signals potential hazards on the road. It warns of the presence of a side vehicle (blind spot assistant), lane change or line crossing.
The classic center tunnel doesn't exist. Consequently, the center console floats freely in the cabin and offers USB ports under the controls, plus additional storage space. Mercedes has paid particular attention to filtering outside air. In fact, 99.6% of pollen, fine dust, and other microparticles are trapped, bringing comfort on board.
The Mercedes EQS electric vehicle is made with high-quality materials, carefully selected and sustainable. The wood used in the EQS comes from local forests. Decorative fabrics are made from waste plastic from the sea and microfiber fabrics from polyethylene terephthalate bottles. The body is made up of 80% secondary steel, such as steel, aluminum, and carbon.
Dimensions and Trunk Volume
The Mercedes-Benz EQS is a very long vehicle (5.22 meters) and can carry up to seven people in total. The width is 1.93 meters and the height is 1.51 meters. The wheelbase of 3.21 meters is exceptional! These dimensions offer first-class space for rear passengers.
The large and convenient electric rear hatch provides access to a huge 610-liter trunk, which reaches 1,770 liters when the rear seats are folded down. That's plenty of space for luggage and other bulky items. Under the floor there is also a container for storing all charging cables and emergency equipment.
Motorization and Performance
At the time of the launch of the Mercedes-AMG EQS, two electric motor configurations were available. Recently a third was added to the catalog:
EQS 450+
This rear-wheel-drive version has an engine that reaches 333 hp (245 kW) of maximum power and 565 Nm of torque. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h occurs in 6.2 seconds.
EQS 580 4MATIC
This configuration is very efficient thanks to two electric motors (one on each axle). The unit develops a power of 523 hp (385 kW) and 858 Nm of torque to all four wheels. Performance is exemplary, with 4.3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h.
Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+
The performance of this third version is significantly higher than that of the classic sedan. With 658 hp (484 kW) and 950 Nm of torque, the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h occurs in 3.8 seconds. The electric motor is limited to 210 km/h for all three configurations, despite a mass of 2,805 kg in the base configuration.
Battery and Range
The Mercedes EQS integrates a large lithium-ion battery with a usable capacity of 108.4 kWh. The highest among electric cars. Tesla boasts record aerodynamics with a Cx of 0.20, never seen before! This coefficient improves efficiency, but also the vehicle's range.
The Mercedes EQS offers an electric range of 783 km in the combined WLTP cycle for the EQS 450+ version, 692 km for the EQS 580 4MATIC version, and 571 km for the third 53 4MATIC+ version. With these results, the Mercedes EQS positions itself as a high-end rival to theTesla Model S.
However, the actual range depends on a number of factors to consider and may therefore differ. Vehicle configuration, driving style, traffic conditions, weather conditions, battery age and condition, use of air conditioning and/or heating system, etc.
Charging the New Mercedes EQS Electric
With a battery powered by a 400-volt system, the Mercedes EQS offers up to 200 kW of direct current power with the Combo standard. In this way, 300 km of range is recovered in 15 minutes and from 10% to 80% in 31 minutes at an available fast charging station (DC), available, among other places, at Ionity stations.
It is also possible to connect the electric vehicle at home to a standard household outlet of 2.3 kW. But there it will take two days for a full charge. Surely a bit too much, but rest assured: with the 11 kW charger supplied as standard, it only takes 6h55 to recover 80%.
New Mercedes EQS: the AMG Line Trim
In France, for example, the Mercedes EQS is delivered with the only sporty-looking trim. The AMG Line trim includes:
Some optional features are available in the Mercedes EQS catalog:
Vehicle Pricing
In terms of pricing, the German limousine is orderable at 135,850 euros in the 450+ version. The top-of-the-range AMG 4Matic+ model costs 169,850 euros. The latest addition to the star brand positions itself close to theTesla Model X Plaid, which costs 141,990 euros.
Our Opinion
If you like modernity, elegance, power, and performance, then the Mercedes EQS is for you! The vehicle's fuel consumption is under control and its maneuverability in the city is pleasant thanks to the rear 10-degree steering axle. The price can be an obstacle for the wallet, but it's difficult to criticize for a luxury limousine.

Notre verdict
The EQS is the reference premium electric sedan, delivering one of the best ranges in its segment (up to 780 km) and premium technology. An ambitious and coherent proposition against rivals such as the Tesla Model S and BMW iX xDrive50.
Generous wheelbase and spacious dimensions guarantee confirmed comfort, although the trunk remains limited for this size category.
The 56-inch HyperScreen display dominates, but the equipment remains conventional for the premium segment without major technological breakthrough.
Premium pricing justified by range and technology, but with no decisive advantage over established electric competitors in the segment.
