Kia plug-in hybrid: new 2022 SUV design

The Kia Sportage 2022 Plug In Hybrid offers a cutting-edge design for creative minds.

Exterior

This large SUV, now in its fifth version, features a new design that stands out along the body. The marked and tense lines underline a slender and elegant silhouette. Its size is equivalent to the Kia Tucson, its cousin, or the Peugeot 3008.

The stunning Matrix LED headlamps, surrounded by a boomerang-shaped daytime running light, are located at the ends of a sophisticated black grille with a honeycomb mesh. The latter stretches across the entire width of the vehicle’s front end.

Also, the rear face is beautiful with a resolutely modern design. It reminds very closely the Kia EV6. There are small tapered LED lights connected by an insert, as well as a hollow tailgate. This strong design is in harmony with a very high-tech interior.

Interior

A spacious and flexible interior with a driver-centered cockpit. In fact, the center console features two large multi-functional screens, each measuring 12.3 inches (from the mid-range).

Tactile and placed side by side, they form a slightly curved unit. With the touch of a fingertip, the driver can easily select infotainment and climate control functions.

The seats are exceptionally well finished and offer a variety of color choices. These materials chosen are soft to the touch, and the details are sophisticated. The driver and passenger seats have a sporty and refined design. Rear passengers enjoy impressive legroom. So you can be comfortable, even on long journeys.

Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid dimensions and trunk space

At 4.51m in length, 1.86m in width, 1.65m in height and a wheelbase of 2.68m, the Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid is average in the compact SUV category.

Thanks to a flexible interior configuration, and a battery located at the front seats, the cargo volume is impressive. Indeed, the rear seats can be folded down easily. The trunk offers a nice volume of 587 to 1,776 liters.

So you can easily arrange the interior of your vehicle, depending on the number of passengers and their luggage. The total mass of the car rises to 1,905 kg, which is 250 kg more than the simple hybrid version. Its pulling capacity is 1,350 kg.

Engines and performance

The new Kia Sportage 2022 plug in hybrid inherits the same architecture as its cousin, the Hyundai Tucson. The technical configuration is based on a 1.6-liter TGDI gasoline engine with 180 horsepower and an electric motor with 91 horsepower.

Together, they offer a combined power of 265 hp and a total torque of 350 Nm. As a technical advantage, the Sportage Plug-In Hybrid offers true all-wheel drive. Also, the six-speed automatic transmission is very smooth.

Performance-wise, they are sufficient to raise the pace, but acceleration is far from breathtaking. The 0 to 100 km/h is reached in 8.2 seconds. However, the discretion of the electric mode is very appreciable in urban environments.

Battery and autonomy

The battery capacity is 13.8 kWh, which provides a nice electric range of 70 km. To recharge your Kia Sportage PHEV, you have two options:

Public charging: You have access to an extensive and growing network of charging stations. The Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid takes only 1 hour and 45 minutes to recover 100% of its battery. That’s enough time to maximize your 100% electric drive. The 7.2 kW on-board charger is standard. However, you will need to order the T2 cable, which costs €237 as an accessory, to connect to a public charging station.
Home charging: using a private charging station at home. To do this, use one of Kia’s authorized partners. The cable for the home plug is supplied as standard, and Kia offers the installation of a reinforced plug for €515 including tax. With the latter, the manufacturer provides a Kia Charge Easy card that allows you to benefit from advantageous rates.

About 15% of the battery remains once the electric range is reduced to zero. This makes it possible to drive at low speeds without waking up the combustion engine and to support the restarts with the torque of the electric motor.

Consumption and CO2 emissions

Compared to its size, the Kia Sportage has low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions: 1.1 L/100km – 25 g/km.

Our opinion

The plug-in hybrid version of the Kia Sportage offers an excellent electric range, as well as a relatively fast charging speed. This allows potential customers to make the best use of its driving capacity without any C02 emissions.

Strong design and high-tech equipment are the other assets of this compact SUV. The Kia brand, for its part, has regained its place as the brand’s best-seller in Europe, thanks to its state-of-the-art technological equipment.
