Launched in 2021, the Mercedes EQS embodies the brand's response to premium segment electrification. This 5.2-meter sedan displays clear ambitions: to rival electric limousines while delivering advanced technological experience. Available in three engine variants—from 245 kW to 484 kW—it targets clientele seeking high performance, substantial range and advanced onboard technologies. Prices range from €106,350 to €169,850 depending on the version selected.

Design and interior

The EQS measures 5.2 meters in length, 1.93 meters in width and 1.51 meters in height. Its generous 3.21-meter wheelbase promises a spacious cabin, particularly for rear passengers. The trunk offers 610 liters in standard configuration, expandable to 1,770 liters with rear seats folded—a respectable volume for an electric sedan of this size.

Design is based on a full grille characteristic of Mercedes electric vehicles and specific light signature. The styling approach favors clean lines and digital component integration, consistent with the brand's premium positioning. The substantial width and elongated silhouette convey a commanding road presence.

Engines and performance

Three powertrains are available. The EQS 450+ develops 245 kW (333 hp) and 568 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds. The EQS 580 4Matic reaches 385 kW (523 hp) and 855 Nm, reducing this time to 4.3 seconds. The AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ variant peaks at 484 kW (658 hp) and 950 Nm, achieving 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

All versions have a top speed limited to 210 km/h. The 4Matic all-wheel drive equips the two higher versions, while the 450+ adopts simple rear-wheel drive. These powertrains reflect Mercedes' strategy of offering a tiered range covering entry-level premium through enhanced performance.

Range and charging

Range varies considerably by version and battery. The 450+, equipped with a 90 kWh battery, claims 780 km in WLTP cycle—the best performance in the lineup. The EQS 580 4Matic, with its 107.8 kWh battery, delivers 676 km. Finally, the AMG 53 4MATIC+, despite a similar 107.9 kWh battery, is limited to 611 km, a logical consequence of its more powerful and energy-hungry powertrain.

Direct current (DC) charging reaches 200 kW for all versions, enabling rapid recovery on long-distance journeys. With alternating current (AC), the 450+ accepts up to 11 kW, while the two other versions reach 22 kW. These capabilities position the EQS within current premium segment standards, without pushing technological boundaries.

Equipment and technology

The major element of the EQS is the 56-inch HyperScreen, divided into three digital segments integrated into the dashboard. This oversized screen centralizes infotainment, climate control and vehicle settings, marking a clear aesthetic departure from previous Mercedes generations.

Beyond this flagship element, the EQS range benefits from typical Mercedes driving assistance systems of the segment—advanced safety package, multiple active assists. Integration of modern connectivity (smartphone, cloud services) fits within the brand's overall digital offering, presenting no major surprises compared to equivalent premium competition.
