2018 Suzuki Swift hybrid: sporty and muscular

Built on a new platform, the restyled Suzuki Swift returns with a unique engine proposition, and an iconic design.

Exterior design

More modern than its predecessors, the Swift hybrid is recognizable at first glance. The latter offers a surprisingly comfortable ride, thanks to reasonably sized wheels (16 inches). Road imperfections are absorbed efficiently. The Suzuki Swift feels like a fish in water, especially in urban areas.

Slightly shortened, the Swift hybrid is lowered and widened. The front grille has been redesigned and sharpened, giving it an aggressive look. Dynamism and robustness are highlighted by the vehicle’s masterful lines and dress. On both sides, black body pillars are revealed, where the door handles are integrated at the rear.

There is a wide choice of colors for the bodywork. A total of nine vibrant and deep colors are available: Burning Red Pearl Metallic, Super Black Pearl Metallic, Mineral Gray Metallic, Premium Silver Metallic, Pure White Pearl Metallic, Speedy Blue Metallic, Flame Orange Pearl Metallic (Super Black Pearl roof Metallic), Rush Yellow Metallic (Super Black Pearl roof Metallic), Burning Red Pearl Metallic. All you have to do is make your choice.

Interior design

Enter a world of comfort and technology. The doors of the Suzuki Hybrid Swift open onto a bright and sober interior, decorated with quality materials.

Designed in harmony with the exterior, the upholstery is comfortable and sporty. The driver’s seat is height adjustable over a wide range. Also, the dashboard has all the femininity that characterizes the Suzuki Swift.

To help the driver better control the many features of the Swift Hybrid, the center console is rotated 5 degrees. Its 7-inch touch screen allows the driver to listen to the radio, stream music, enjoy the Europe 3D map navigation, and benefit from a rearview camera.

You can also connect your smartphone to it. So with the Mirror Link feature, some of your apps appear on the screen. Control your features with voice recognition, without taking your eyes off the road.

Trunk dimensions and volume

The Swift hybrid has a length of 3.85 meters, a width of 1.73 meters, and a height of 1.49 meters. That’s 22 cm shorter than a Renault Clio, but there’s just as much space in the back.

Thanks to its generous wheelbase of 2.45 meters, this hybrid vehicle offers incomparable comfort, and its interior offers more comfort, both in the front and in the back. Numerous storage compartments are at your disposal and allow you to organize your trips in the simplest way possible.

With a 2/3 1/3 folding bench seat, you can accommodate larger objects, thus increasing the trunk volume. Depending on the configuration, the trunk offers from 265 to 947 liters.

The Suzuki Swift weighs only 865 kg unladen thanks to the lightened suspensions developed in the same spirit as the chassis. That’s 120 grams less than the previous model.

Engine, performance and consumption

In order to meet expectations in terms of environmental protection, the Japanese manufacturer offers a new 1.2 DUALJET HYBRID 4-cylinder gasoline engine that benefits from the Hybrid SHVS system (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki).

The latter is reduced from 90 hp to 83 hp (61 kW and 120 Nm of torque), but its micro-hybridisation is reinforced.

The engine is equipped with a starter-alternator that temporarily adds less than 3 hp (2.3 kW) of power and 50 Nm of torque. This engine is available in 4×2 or AllGrip Auto all-wheel drive, 2 or 4 wheel drive.

The Suzuki Swift Hybrid can be equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic transmission. It’s up to you, depending on your preference!

In terms of performance, the top speed is 180 km/h with the 4×2 manual transmission and 175 km/h with the automatic transmission. With the AllGrip all-wheel drive system, the engine is limited to 170 km/h.

The average fuel consumption of the Suzuki Hybrid Swift is between 4.7 and 5.4 liters/100 km. CO2 emissions range from 106 to 121 g/km, depending on the configuration chosen.

How does the Suzuki Swift hybrid recharge?

It’s simple, efficient and reliable. When decelerating or braking, the system recovers some of the kinetic energy and recharges the 0.036 kWh (12V) lithium-ion micro hybrid battery. This relieves the combustion engine and saves you gas during your trips.

Our opinion

At 3.85 meters long, the Suzuki Swift Hybrid is the shortest all-purpose city car on the market. It remains a good proposition compared to the competition and especially in terms of value for money.

Also, its very soft hybridization system offers an incomparable behavior in urban use. Its first rivals are the Toyota Yaris hybrid and the Renault Clio E-Tech.
