How to Choose the Right Children's Motorcycle

If your child wants to start in the world of two wheels after seeing you on a motorcycle, and you're not sure how to choose his first mini motorcycle, don't worry. We have the advice and guidance you need to find the perfect motorcycle for your child.

What is the best age to start and how to do it?

There is no specific age at which a child should start riding a motorcycle, especially with models adapted for children available from ages 3 to 5 years. The ability to ride a motorcycle can be a good indicator that a child is ready to try motorcycling. The child's personal preferences also play an important role in this decision.

However, age does influence the choice of engine power: a motorcycle designed for a 10-year-old will be considerably more powerful than one designed for a 5-year-old. Additionally, motor coordination, which usually improves with age, is a crucial factor to consider; a ten-year-old will often have better coordination than a five-year-old, even if the latter is especially skilled.

Children's Equipment

Whatever your age, it is essential that you have complete equipment, not just a helmet. In addition to an approved helmet, you will need gloves, boots, elbow pads, knee pads, and back protection.

Mini motorcycle guide: legislation and safe practices for young riders

Mopeds authorized for road use require an AM license and are available from age 14. At the same time, there is a wide variety ofmini motorcyclessmaller in size, especially designed for the youngest riders and suitable for off-road use.

In contrast, models such as mini cross, pocket cross, pocket bike, dirt bike, and pit bike are not approved for use on public roads and their use is restricted to closed and private circuits. Fortunately, there are many options to practice motorcycling legally under the supervision of professionals, which facilitates safe driving and the acquisition of proper techniques.

What mini motorcycle models and what criteria should you choose based on age?

Initially, the choice of motorcycle model will be based on the child's age, without neglecting their height, abilities, and previous experience. For example, even though a child is over 10 years old and has no previous motorcycle experience, it would not be appropriate to start with a 90cc motocross motorcycle, but rather with a 50cc motorcycle.

Choose the ideal mini motorcycle for your child's age:

Ages 3 to 5:

  • Choose mini bikes with low seat height (from 45 cm)
  • Weight less than 30 kg (from 23 kg)
  • Stabilizers can be added
  • Low speed with low-power electric motors

Ages 6 to 8:

  • Bikes with seats from 60 cm
  • More responsive and somewhat heavier (up to 50 kg)
  • In some models, power can be adjusted to multiple levels
  • Suitable for internal combustion and electric models
  • Pit bike option with smaller wheels and wider tires for greater stability
  • Older and more experienced children can opt for higher-performance models or racing bikes

Choosing the right children's mini motorcycle: electric or internal combustion?

Choosing between an electric motorcycle or internal combustion engine for a child depends mainly on age and available range. For small children, electric motors of less than 300 watts clearly dominate the market. From age six onwards, options expand to internal combustion engines, which offer comparable performance.

The choice is usually based on several factors, such as the practicality of daily use, since electric motors are charged simply by plugging in, unlike combustion engines, which require stops at the fuel pump and preparation of mixtures for certain models.

Electric motors also have the advantage of being silent and reducing the risk of burns, unlike combustion engines. However, in the case of larger models intended for older children, the range tends to focus almost exclusively on combustion engines.
