The Toyota Corolla Hybrid arrives on the French market in 2019 in two body styles: compact sedan and Touring Sports estate. The Japanese manufacturer offers two powertrain levels for this generation. The entry-level relies on a conventional 140 hp hybrid system with front-wheel drive, while the 196 hp Touring Sports version benefits from a more powerful engine paired with all-wheel drive transmission. This strategy positions the Corolla Hybrid against petrol family sedans and first-generation hybrids in the segment, with a pricing range from €27,900 to €38,750.

Design and Habitability

The 2019 Corolla adopts a sober silhouette, without marked stylistic flair. The sedan measures 4,370 mm in length by 1,790 mm in width and 1,435 mm in height, classical proportions for the segment. The 2,640 mm wheelbase offers adequate interior space for four adult passengers, though habitability remains conventional compared to more generous rivals.

The sedan boot displays 313 liters of usable space, expandable to 361 liters with seats folded. The Touring Sports estate is more versatile with 581 to 598 liters depending on configuration, making it better suited for families needing genuine cargo space. The controlled weight of 1,345 kg contributes to the hybrid system's moderate fuel consumption.

Powertrain and Performance

Two motorized architectures compose the offer. The base variant relies on a parallel hybrid system combining a petrol engine and electric motor for a total of 103 kW (140 hp). It transmits power via a continuously variable automatic transmission with front-wheel drive. Acceleration is measured: 0 to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds for the sedan.

The 196 hp Touring Sports version adopts a higher tier: 144 kW (196 hp) with all-wheel drive and nickel-metal hydride battery. It achieves 0 to 100 in 7.7 seconds and benefits from better stability in difficult conditions. Both powertrains use non-plug-in hybrid systems, unlike plug-in hybrids: the electric motor draws energy from braking and deceleration.

Range and Charging

No electric-only range data applies to this Corolla Hybrid, as it is a non-rechargeable hybrid system. The lithium-ion battery (or nickel-metal hydride on the 196 hp) recharges exclusively through energy recovery during braking and deceleration. Real-world range therefore depends solely on fuel stored in the petrol tank.

This architecture simplifies daily use: no external charging constraints, no investment in home charging infrastructure. The owner simply refuels at the pump like a traditional vehicle, making it an accessible transition solution for those hesitant about pure electric.

Equipment and Technology
